Basic Website Terms defined with simple explanations

Browser or web browser

Although nearly 90% of all personal computers use Internet Explorer from MicroSoft as their web browser, several other popular browsers are available. These include; Netscape , Opera , Mozilla and Konqueror . Your website pages will not look identical in all web browsers. Care in basic page design will ensure that your pages will still be usable by all your visitors. Explorer is not the only web browser! The rest are far less forgiving, when they try to display a poor page design. Meta tags are important to all web browsers.

Term Definition: Source: Wikipedia.org — ( Web-Browser )

A web browser is a software application that enables a user to display and interact with HTML documents hosted by web servers or held in a file system. Popular browsers available for personal computers include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Safari and Konqueror. A browser is the most commonly used kind of user agent.

Browser display properties will determine how your web page looks on the monitor screen. Web page validation proves that your pages will operate ( display properly ) on different browsers. Every web page should be validated. Validate this page? See also: Screen Resolution

Meta Tags

Meta tags provide important information to web browsers and some search engines. Although they are not visible to human visitors, they can still provide a lot of information about a web page. They tell the browser which document type and character set the page uses, page information description, content self rating, the page author and their contact information, web page common language and more. Most search engines ignore most meta tags information. Use meta tags correctly, or don't use them at all.

Term Definition Meta Tag definitions: Source: Wikipedia.org — ( Meta Tags )

The two most popular Meta tags used for search engine optimization are the Meta description tag and Meta keyword tag. The Meta description tag allows web site owners to describe what the web page is about. Search engines such as Google still use this to display the description of a website on their search results pages. The Meta keyword tag allows site owners to put keywords in it to help search engines decide what a web site is about. They ignore them anyway.

In the early 2000's, search engines moved away from any reliance on Meta tags, as many web sites used inappropriate keywords or were keyword stuffing to obtain any and all traffic possible.

Metatags were abused in the first few years of the www. Most major search engines place little value on the declared keywords and do not rank web pages from the list you provide anyway. Some very important meta tags are content-type, description, language, author, and contact.

DHTML (JavaScript)

Java is a computer programming language (like C++). JavaScript is a markup language commonly used on web pages. Sometimes referred to as dhtml, because it provides dynamic web page actions, JavaScript is not HTML. JavaScript is embedded into the actual html web page and the browser performs the actions indicated in the script. A simple method for designing user interactive web pages.

Term Definition: Source: Wikipedia.org (main) — ( JavaScript )

JavaScript, in its more modern form, is an object-based scripting programming language based on the concept of prototypes. The language is best known for its use in web sites, but is also used to enable scripting access to objects embedded in other applications. It was originally developed by Brendan Eich of Netscape Communications Corporation under the name Mocha, then LiveScript, and finally renamed to JavaScript.

Free JavaScript resources can come with a big repair bill. Editing and customizing a JavaScript to function properly on your business site, can be a time consuming process. JavaScript requires exact written code. It does not permit close enough markup! Search engines don't follow any of the links written in JavaScript.

Alt Text

Search engine spiders , text only, audio browsers and others can't see all the beautiful pictures on your web page. When the web browser (like Explorer) loads a web page, it also searches for and retrieves external image files and temporarily places them on the page being displayed. They are not part of the written web page. Alt text (alt= attribute) describes the graphic with real words. Eliminate the alt text and all that's left, is blank page space! Many beautiful web pages simply appear to be blank pages to the search engines.

Term Definition: Source: Watchfire.com — ( Alt Text )

Alternative text that is placed in the code for an image in an HTML page. If the image is not displayed, the Alt text can be presented instead. Alt text is especially useful to people using speaking browsers. The text should be a brief representation of the purpose of the image, not necessarily a description of the image. Alt text is often displayed in tool tips when you move the mouse over images.

Alternative text descriptions for ALL THE GRAPHICS used on a website can often make or break your web site's user experience. This includes how search engines index and rank your web pages. Visual presentation is only one aspect of a good web page. Providing descriptive alt text and long descriptions when necessary, will enhance both user accessibility and your search engine results ranking.

Access keys

Good Access keys are a fast and convenient method for navigating an accessible web site. To be accessible to people with disabilities, your site needs to provide users with an alternative method to using a mouse. Simple access keys are a much faster method for finding your way around an accessible web site.

Term Definition: Source: Wikipedia — ( Access Keys )

An access key allows a computer user to immediately jump to a specific part of a web page via the keyboard. The user does this by pressing ALT (PC) or CTRL (Mac) followed by the appropriate character on the keyboard.

Due to Opera's many keyboard shortcuts you have to escape Opera's keyboard mode before using access keys. In order to do this key SHIFT+ESC preceding the ALT combination.

Access key navigation may be the only way certain user groups can visit and navigate your small business web site. Providing access to every user, shows your potential customers that you care about every visitor. A user friendly web site provides access keys.

DocType

The document type page declaration tells the web browser how to read your web page and then display it correctly. Validation of a web page relies on the correct declaration for the type of markup used. Writing good web pages depends on the correct use of the markup language (code) and character set to be used in displaying text information content. Our site's web pages use valid xhtml1-strict.dtd.

Term Definition: Source: Wikipedia — ( Doctype )

A Document Type Declaration, or DOCTYPE, associates a particular SGML or XML document with a Document Type Definition (DTD). In the serialized form of the document, it manifests as a short string of markup that conforms to a particular syntax.

Missing Doctype declaration forces browsers to fall-back to the simplest document type available. Making the effort to use the correct declaration, will allow your web site users to access the web page the way it was written. An important component in producing a really good webpage. Without the correct DTD your web page will not validate, period.

Blog ?

Although a blog can be an interesting addition to a "General Interest" or "personal" website, business web sites can quickly lose professional credibility with their customer. Allowing users to add content to your web site can also create security problems if extreme caution is not exercised.

Term Definition: Source: Wikipedia — ( Blog )

A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled web log) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of periodic articles (normally in reverse chronological order). Although most early weblogs were manually updated, tools to automate the maintenance of such sites made them accessible to a much larger population, and the use of some sort of browser-based software is now a typical aspect of "blogging".

Weblogs really don't belong on most small business websites. As tempting as it might be to tell the world about the daily routine at your place of business, it is not very appropriate. Small business web sites need to maintain professional credibility, if they wish to attract new customers.
